The Portuguese deep state is not yet clearly documented on Wikispooks, but appears to be a fairly typical European deep state, with the Espírito Santo family close to its centre. In 2021 Portugal reportedly surpassed an initial goal of injecting 85% of adults with the COVID-19 jabs in nine months.

The Portuguese deep state has been heavily shaped by forces including the Espírito Santo family and their bank, Banco Espírito Santo for more than 100 years, especially during the Salazar dictatorship years. During the Covid event, the government marked in lockstep with the SDS' fearmongering and was reportedly very effective at inducing people to get jabbed.

History

Portugal was a European colonial power, with colonies including Brazil, some in Africa and some in the Far East.

20^th Century

Estado Novo 1933-1974

The Estado Novo was the corporatist Portuguese state which came to power in 1933. António de Oliveira Salazar died in 1968 and the group lost control of the state until 1974. Its secret police the International and State Defense Police (PIDE) were founded and led by Captain Agostinho Lourenço, and was involved in many deep state activities, including torture, kidnapping and paramilitary units. According to Douglas Wheeler "an analysis of Lourenco's career suggest[s] strongly that British Intelligence Services' influence had an impact on the structure and activity of PVDE". Lourenço had earned a reputation with British observers, recorded in a confidential document generated at the British Embassy, which suggested a "pro-British" bias on his part. Lourenço always kept a good relationship with the MI6.

WW2

Lisbon was the stage for many deep state activities during WW2, when the country was neutral. The British spook John Beevor created a stay behind network in Portugal during WW2, a feature common to most if not all European deep states. This has not had much exposure, in contrast to countries such as Italy or Belgium.

1960s

The struggle for independence in the Portuguese colonies of Angola and Mozambique led to the security services working together with their South African counterparts.

Manuel R. Espirito Santo Silva was a Portuguese financier and member of the banking Espírito Santo family which did very well out of the Estado Novo fascist government until 1974. He took over the company after his brother's death, and developed a network of deep state actors and financiers such as the Rockefeller brothers (David and Nelson), the Wallenbergs, and Prince Bernhard. A defender of the Portuguese colonial empire, he attended the 1966 and 1972 Bilderberg meetings.

1970s

Alexandre Ribeiro da Cunha, a Portuguese diplomat, went to a meeting of Le Cercle in US in December 1973. Cercle visitor António de Spínola was President of Portugal for 4 months in 1974.

Carnation Revolution

Deep state structures saw a break with the 1974 Carnation Revolution, which discredited the old security apparatus.

The time after revolution saw intense activity from the CIA and European Social-Democrat foundations, particularly the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation, to steer the country into controllable paths.

In 1975, CODECO was formed ^{[By whom?]}. According to Fernando Farinha Simões "This organization intended to defend, in Portugal, if necessary by guerrilla means, the values of the Western world."

When the 1974 revolution potentially threatened the future of the bases, the CIA created the Azores Liberation Front for a possible secession, but the issue faded away as the country came under control again.

1980s

Jaime Nogueira Pinto, a deep state actor, attended several meetings of Le Cercle in the 1980s. Francisco Pinto Balsemão was Prime Minister of Portugal from January 1981 to June 1983, getting the job after the 1980 Camarate air crash. He soon moved politics to an unswerving loyalty to the United States. He was a member of the Bilderberg Steering committee and attended 7 Bilderbergs in the 1980s and all those in the 1990s, only missing one up to 2015.

Many Portuguese officers and companies were involved in illegal arms deals centering around The Enterprise.^[When?]

VIPaedophile

The Casa Pia child sexual abuse ring was a case of child sexual abuses involving a number of children and employees at Casa Pia, a Portuguese state-run institution for the education and support of poor children and under-age orphans. The ring, which at a time ran a male child prostitution network involving 100 boys, operated for decades, and involved several prominent men, suggesting that VIPaedophile tactics were used in Portugal.

1990s

In 1996 the Forum Portugal Global was founded. It is a very low-profile association of Portuguese companies that wish to promote Portuguese participation in the Trilateral Commission.

Francisco Lucas Pires was Portugal's Minister of Culture 1982-1983 and became the first Portuguese vice-president of the European Parliament in 1987. He attended the 1988 Bilderberg. In 1991 he broke from his party and in 1998 died suddenly of a "heart attack", aged 53.
