Robert E. Gorelick was a CIA spook.[1][2][3]
Education
Career
Peru
In Peru he was the handler of Vladimiro Montesinos, the Chief of the intelligence agency SIN.[4] The CIA paid SIN, the Peruvian intelligence organization run by Montesinos, $1 million a year for 10 years to fight drug trafficking, despite evidence that Montesinos was also in business with Colombian narcotraffickers. The CIA and State Department first cultivated Montesinos in the 1970s, and maintaining a relationship with him for a quarter-century despite warnings that he was working for both sides in the drug war (much like the CIA itself).[5]
After the fall of President Alberto Fujimoro, Montesinos was arrested, on charges ranging from money laundering, illicit enrichment and corruption to organizing death squads, protecting drug lords and illegal arms trafficking. In August 2000, Montesinos looked for CIA help again to defend himself against charges of selling arm. The former intelligence chief gave court officials the names of two CIA officers who could provide him with an alibi, including Gorelick, claiming they could vouch that he had nothing to do with a ring that smuggled arms from Jordan through Peru to guerrillas in the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.[6][7]
Later activities
In 2024, he visited the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, in his first visit to the Albanian capital, discussing how "Tirana can be the safest city in Europe"[8]
In January 2025, Gorelick said at a symposium on the issue held in Rome that Donald Trump (not yet inaugurated) would try to exclude Pope Francis from the international scene, and that one issue of conflict will be China. "The dialogue between Washington and the Vatican is already much more conflictual," Gorelick said at that forum.[9]
