Peter Christian Frølich is a Norwegian lawyer and politician for the Conservative Party who in 2026 declared that "old principles" no longer will stand in the way for "protecting the country".
Background
He is the son of lawyer Peter Frølich and doctor Karin Wold Frølich, grandson of shipowner Peter Frølich and cousin of conservative politicians Jens Frølich Holte and Jacob Mæhle.[1]
Education
Frølich was educated at Bergen Handelsgymnasium, an upper secondary school in Bergen, Norway, from 2003 to 2006.[2] Frølich was conscripted into the Norwegian Armed Forces from 2006 to 2007.[2]
Frølich attended the University of Bergen from 2007 until 2012, graduating with a Master's degree in Law.[2]
Activities
He was a member of parliament for Hordaland since 2013. Following the 2025 election, he moved to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence and additionally became the party's spokesperson on defence.
Frølich is founding chair of the association Fritt Ukraina (Free Ukraine), an NGO that collects equipment for the Ukrainian forces fighting in the war in the Ukraine. The equipment collected is driven by volunteers to Ukraine, which Frølich has done several times. He is also the organization's chairman. He has traveled 16 times to the front line in Ukraine with supplies for the soldiers, as of October 2025.[3] He resigned in March 2026 when becoming leader of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence.
Opinions
In March 2026, Frølich declared that Norway is in a pre-war period and will not let "old principles" stand in the way of "protecting the country" and wanted to "pick up the pace of mobilization in Norway". Freylich was very critical that the government has not come further in buying weapons systems and equipment before prices skyrocketed. But now it has to be done, no matter what the cost.[4]
Regarding nuclear weapons, he promised that "Our ban policy is at the moment firmly in place. At the same time we should have a pragmatic approach to it and not close any doors. The world is changing, so sitting and clinging to all old principles no longer works." At the same time, he holds the Russian civilian population complicit in the Ukraine war.[4]
Regarding the March 2026 US-Israeli attack on Iran, he said that the international legal basis for the U.S. attack on Iran wass tenuous at best, but warned the government against being "unilaterally concerned with international law" .[4]
