Nicolas Barré is a French editor who was a central figure of the business newspaper Les Échos, headed the editorial offices of Politico and Figaro, and attended the 2013 Bilderberg meeting.[1][2]
Education
Nicolas Barré graduated from Sciences Po Paris in 1985 and from the Training Center for Journalists, in the same city, in 1988.
Career
He began his career as a correspondent in New York and then in Tokyo, for the business newspaper Les Échos.[3]
On September 30, 2004, the Dassault armaments and media corporation announced the departure of Yves de Chaisemartin from the management of Le Figaro and the arrival of a new boss, in the company of several journalists from Les Échos, among whom Nicolas Barré who was "close to Nicolas Beytout", the new director.[4]
Barré was then promoted to deputy editorial director of Le Figaro from 2006 to 2008, then returned to Les Échos, again following Nicolas Beytout, who on November 19, 2007 announced joining the LVMH group as director of the Media division, shortly after the acquisition of Les Échos. At the beginning of 2008, the name of Nicolas Barré, cited as the new deputy director of the business newspaper, caused a reaction from the Society of Journalists (SDJ) in the paper, which denounced interference from the new management and considered it "essential" that the editorial director Henri Gibier "be able to constitute his team in complete independence"[5].
Five years later, Beytout promoted him to editorial director in April 2013, replacing Henri Gibier, then in May the same year founded the liberal, pro-EU and pro-business newspaper L'Opinion, where Bernard Arnault contributed half the capital of 12 to 15 million euros[6], later supplemented by other billionaires.[7] Nicolas Barré was given the job of editorial director, until he was dismissed in March 2023.
He joined Politico France[8], as editorial director, at the beginning of December 2024.[9]
At the beginning of 2026, he quit editorial office[10].
He was mooted as a new editor-in-chief of Libération in April 2026.[11]
