Mary Phagan was born into a Georgia family of tenant farmers. Phagan left school at age 10 to work part-time in a textile mill. In 1912 she took a job with the National Pencil Company and worked 55 hours per week. She worked across the hallway from Leo Frank's office.[1]
Her death in April 1913 remains one of the most analyzed and contested murder cases in American legal history. Mary Phagan-Kean from the Phagan family line upholds the initial jury verdict against Leo Frank, who was convicted of her murder and upon reversal of the verdict, lynched by an angry mob.[2]
