John D. Bennett is a retired senior CIA spook.[1]
Education
A Massachusetts native, Mr. Bennett received a B.A. degree in government from Harvard University in 1975 and an M.A. in "National Security Studies" from Georgetown University in 1991. Bennett was an infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1975 to 1980.[2]
Career
Since joining the CIA in 1981, Bennett worked more than 17 years abroad in multiple assignments, including as Chief of Station in multiple countries. He worked as a diplomat in Southeast Asia and Africa (Togo 1983[3], Chad 1985, Lubumbashi in Zaire 1988,[4], Kenya..)
Bennett was the agency's chief of station in Islamabad, Pakistan in his last foreign posting.[2] but was recalled after a lawyer for a local journalist publicly revealed the officer's name and said he should be held legally accountable for the deaths of the client's relatives in a U.S. drone strike.[5][6]
Bennett worked as the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director of Central Intelligence from May 1990 to May 1991.[2]
He held senior executive Headquarters assignments as Deputy Chief, Africa Division and Chief of Africa Operations from 1995-1999; Chief, Special Activities Division from 2003-2005; and Deputy Director of the National Clandestine Service for Community Human Intelligence (meaning that he was responsible for coordinating human-intelligence efforts with other agencies such as the Defense Intelligence Agency[7]) from 2005-2006.[2]
He returned from retirement to become Chief of the National Clandestine Service (aka CIA/Deputy Director for Operations) in July 2010.[2]
