John William Middendorf II is a former United States diplomat, Secretary of the Navy, and Republican political operative.

He is a member of the board of trustees for The Heritage Foundation.

Activities

In 1969, as US ambassador to the Netherlands, Middendorf gifted a moon rock to former PM Willem Drees. The rock ended up in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. In 2009, it was exposed that the object, which is roughly the size of a matchbox was "nothing but petrified wood hardly worth 50 euros". The US space agency NASA gifted pieces of the alleged moon rock to several countries.
