Education
Crumpton is a graduate of the University of New Mexico and, with honors, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.[1]
Career
During his 24 years in the CIA's Clandestine Service, he operated mostly in abroad, including tours as Chief of Station.
In 1981, he began his career at the CIA in the Africa division in Liberia[2] in the 1980s.[3]
In 1998-99 he worked as deputy chief in the FBI's International Terrorism Operations Section, while on loan from CIA.[4] In 1998 was responsible for the investigation of the bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and the 2000 attack of the USS Cole off the coast of Yemen, attributed to al Qaeda[2]
On the day of the 9/11, Crumpton had just taken over as CIA station chief in Canberra.[5] He was recalled to become chief of Counterterrorism Center/Special Operations (CTC/SO) in the CIA, in charge of day-to-day running of the war in Afghanistan. He was involved with Afghanistan until 2002.[6]
He was the deputy director of the Counter-Terrorism Center from 1999 to 2001,[7]. He was head of the US covert response in Afghanistan after 9/11,[8] directing the 90-day overthrow of the Taliban.[9]
He was chief of the CIA's National Resources Division, from 2003 to 2005.[10] As head of the National Resources Division he hired future CIA Director Gina Haspel as his deputy.[11]
From 2003 to 2005, he was Chief of CIA's National Resource Division, responsible for all Clandestine Service operations internally in the United States. In 2005, President George W. Bush appointed him Ambassador-at-Large and U.S. Coordinator for Counterterrorism, where he attended a 2006 meeting on "counterterrorism".[12][1]
Later activities
Crumpton founded Crumpton Global in 2008. "Advising Fortune 500 companies, investment firms, and family offices, Crumpton Global has worked in more than 120 countries". Crumpton was on the advisory board of Stone Canyon Industries Holdings Inc. He previously sat on the advisory boards of AECOM, the Coca-Cola Company, and DC Capital Partners. For eight years he was a director of Argan, Inc.[1]
Propaganda
Crumpton is also involved in TV and film production, creating and leading the film company Aardwolf Creative LLC.[13] Together with his business partner, former CIA analyst Rodney Faraon, he was an executive producer for NBC's State of Affairs starring Katherine Heigl.[14]
