Private secretary of the Dutch royal family during Beatrix and Claus their reign, and later for the Dutch Foreign Ministers under Johan Willem Beyen and Joseph Luns.

Henrik Jan baron van Asbeck was a Dutch civil servant and private secretary to Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands and Prince Claus of Amsberg.

Background

Van Asbeck was a member of the Van Asbeck family and son of Prof. Dr. Frederik Mari baron van Asbeck (1889-1968), professor of international law and international political history. In 1946, Frederik van Asbeck was Chief Cabinet of Governor-General Van Mook in Indonesia. In August 1947 Van Asbeck became chairman of the Afrika-Studiecentrum in Leiden, which he founded with Petrus Johannes Idenburg.

His mother was Elisabeth Diderica Walradina Jonckheer (1893-1978).

Career

After law school, Van Asbeck became a civil servant in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1954 he became private secretary to ministers Johan Willem Beyen and Joseph Luns at that ministry. On 1 April 1967 he was appointed private secretary and head of the joint private Secretariat of Princess Beatrix and Prince Claus of the Netherlands, which he remained until 1971. On his departure in that latter position he was awarded the Cross of Honour in the House order of Orange. He was also vice-chancellor of the Royal House orders.

Van Asbeck was director of the interior of the Dutch Red Cross and an officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau.

Marriage

He married Sonja Francisca Driessen (1924-2018) in 1954 with whom he had three children, including Peter van Asbeck and Ewout van Asbeck.
