The Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW) is a main political party in the UK. Since September 2025, Zack Polanski has been the party's leader.

GPEW has five representatives in the House of Commons and two in the House of Lords, in addition to over 1,300 councillors at the local government level and three members of the London Assembly.

Background

In 1990, what was then the UK-wide Green Party – which had initially been established as the PEOPLE Party in 1973 – divided into the Green Party of England and Wales, the Scottish Greens and the Green Party Northern Ireland. Since 1990, they have been three completely separate and unique political parties, with their own separate leaders, memberships and policies.

GPEW went through centralising reforms spearheaded by the Green 2000 group in early 1991; they also sought to emphasise growth in local governance, doing so throughout 1990. In 2010, the party gained its first member of Parliament in its then-leader Caroline Lucas. As the party's support is spread out across England and Wales and has rarely been found in electorally significant clusters, the party held only one seat in the House of Commons from 2010 to 2019, before reaching four seats in 2024. The Green Party supports replacing the UK's first-past-the-post voting system with proportional representation, which would grant all parties a share of seats in Parliament based on their national vote share.

Membership

Since 2025, and in particular since Polanski's election as leader, GPEW membership has more than tripled; it has seen a significant increase of support in polling, notably from voters dissatisfied with the abandonment of policies and changes in direction by the Labour Party. Their youth wing, the Young Greens of England and Wales, has risen in membership to 50,000, becoming Europe's largest youth wing

On 2 July 2024 blogger Tony Greenstein wrote:

"Vote Green ONLY when there is no socialist alternative – they are neither anti-capitalist, anti-Zionist, anti-imperialist or anti-racist."

Jewish Greens

The Jewish Greens faction was established to offer advice and guidance to local and regional parties and Green Party bodies on issues that matter to Jewish members of the Green Party and to the Jewish community as a whole. Controversially, Jewish Greens urged party members to vote against 2026 conference motion A105 "Zionism is Racism" that was proposed by Lubna Speitan, who said:

"Okay, as you know, I am Palestinian. This party says it stands with Palestinians and is one of the supporters for its stance. And I’m here today for those Palestinian and bringing forward this motion drafted by Palestinians. And with support from our Jewish allies with legal input on our motion.

"Zionism is Racism" has had a record-breaking number of over 332 proposals.

"This attempt being made to rule out order is an attempt, an attack at democracy. To silence me, a Palestinian Muslim woman, confronting the racist reality of Zionism and its erasure of my family and people.

"There are a huge number of people here who want to hear this motion.

"A vote for this motion is a vote for clarity and equality. Zionism is racism and must be truly confronted… We reject all amendments to this motion. Free Palestine."

However, instead of proceeding to a vote, the Chair closed the conference.
