Frederick B. Cook is a US diplomat who was exposed as the CIA Chief of Station in Venezuela during the 2002 coup attempt.

Background

Born in Washington, D.C., Cook was raised in the Foreign Service, living in India, Jordan, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

Career

Joining the Foreign Service in 1972, Cook was active in Africa, the Western Hemisphere, and Washington, in all Foreign Service disciplines except Economics and Public Diplomacy. He worked as a "Management Officer" in La Paz, Bolivia, Havana,Cuba, Gaborone, Botswana, and Monrovia, Liberia. Washington assignments have included Deputy Director of Information Resources Management in the Executive Secretariat, Labor Advisor for the Bureau of African Affairs, and Systems Development Officer for the Office of Overseas Buildings.

He was as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela.

After leaving Venezuela, Cook was assigned as the Foreign Policy Advisor to the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa, a US military force based at Camp Lemonier, ]]Djibouti]].

He was appointed ambassador of the United States to the Central African Republic, where he worked 2007 through 2010.

A cable written by Frederick Cook, on March 5, 2002 – barely a month before the coup against Hugo Chávez – exclaimed, "Another piece falls into place," referring to the pact made between the opposition fractions to implement their "transitional government" after the coup.
