Eugen F. Burgstaller was a CIA spook who was Chief of Station in in Beirut and Paris..

Education

He studied at Harvard, and won a prize in 1942 for being best in German language studies. For that reason, it is likely he joined OSS or similar during the war.

Career

He joined the CIA in 1951. In addition to several years in Washington D.C., he was posted in Vienna, Frankfurt, Beirut, and Paris.

He was stationed in Vienna, Austria around 1957.

He was Chief of Station in Beirut around 1967, during the Six-day war.

He was outed as CIA Paris station chief in 1976 by Liberation., where the station had "sources and collaborators in the three-digit figures". According to a -faked but factually correct -"FREE POLAND Special Report", he maintained a network of informers in exile-Polish organizations in Paris.

One foreign intelligence service officer once said to me, "Mr. Burgstaller, you know the local antiestablishment press accuses me of all sorts of horrors, of being a CIA agent, of being in the American pay." He said, "This is not important at all because no one of any consequence in my country pays any attention to those sort of gross accusations." "On the other hand," he said, "were an authoritative-sounding leak to appear on the front page of the Herald Tribune, I would be receiving a call from the President of my country within 10 minutes telling me to distance myself from you people."
