Education
He was born July 19, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Ohio. He graduated in 1955 from Michigan State University. [1]
Career
He was recruited to the Central Intelligence Agency on campus, and began a 39-year career as an operations officer immediately thereafter, with time away to serve in the United States Army.[1]
His overseas postings included Germany, Bulgaria, Iran, Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. In three of those countries Burton was Chief of Station.[1]
He was the Chief of the CIA's Soviet and East Europe Division 1984-89, during the height of the Cold War.[1]
He was a good friend of Shirley Temple Black.[1]
Family
Burton met Rosalie Marie Prokarym at CIA and after a very quick courtship, they were married September 30, 1958. Rosalie was by his side throughout his career, making her own significant mark as a CIA employee and later as a librarian at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies; Aryamehr Technical University in Tehran, Iran; the American Embassy in Moscow and Jenner & Block Law Firm in Washington, DC.[1] Rosalie Gerber died in 1999.[2]
