The aircraft, callsign IAM1495, is conducting airborne early warning and ISR activity near Bucharest without forward deployment. The significance lies in Italy’s ability to project persistent surveillance on NATO’s eastern flank while remaining based on national territory. Since the early months of the conflict, Italy has repeatedly projected its CAEW fleet toward the Black Sea on a mission-by-mission basis. What the CAEW Brings to the Black Sea The Italian G550 CAEW (Conformal Airborne Early Warning) is far more than a surveillance jet.
