At least four USAF KC-135R Stratotankers were airborne during the morning hours, operating in coordination over international waters. The aircraft involved were identified as BLUE 72 (reg. 58-0018), BLUE 71 (reg. 58-0042), BLUE 61 (reg. 60-0356) and BLUE 62 (reg. 63-8020). The simultaneous presence of four tankers strongly indicates a planned Coronet movement, typically used to support the long-range ferrying of combat aircraft. In this context, the most plausible explanation is that the tankers were supporting the return of F-15E Strike Eagles to the continental United States following a deployment cycle in the Middle East (Al-Udeid AB). Coronet missions are regularly used for this purpose, providing air-to-air refuelling to fighter cells during multi-leg transits across Europe and the Mediterranean before crossing the Atlantic.
