Zeynep Damla Gürel is a Turkish politician who attended the 2010 Bilderberg meeting as special advisor to the President.
Career
She was elected CHP Deputy for Istanbul 2002-2007 and was a Member of the Turkish delegation of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.[1] She was known for her closeness to fellow Bilderberger Kemal Derviş[2] As a deputy, Gürel worked closely with the EU Communication Group, which was coordinated both on behalf of his party and with the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
In 2006 she travelled on a "study trip" to the US as part of the US Friendship Caucus, meeting among others with the German Marshall Fund and the CSIS.[3]
In 2008, Gürel was appointed special advisor to President Abdullah Gül (from the Islamist AKP party) in European affairs.[4] "Let's not get stuck on everyday issues. The EU process must continue. This is a state duty," she argued. "For Turkey, the EU issue is a national goal. The fact that Turkey is slowing down shows how much intensive efforts should actually be made. She said that President Gül "cares about this process and wants to do something, that this issue is above politics and that he cares about the efforts of the social democrats on this issue."[5]
