William Clarence Grimsley Jr. was a high ranking CIA officer who was Chief of Station in several countries.[1]
Background
After graduating from high school in Virginia, Grimsley served briefly in the United States Navy, and was honorably discharged at the end of World War II. he accompanied his mother and father to Japan immediately after the war, traveling on the first troop ship that carried American military dependents to Japan, in 1945. E worked at an Air Force commissary in Japan for a year, then returned to New York City to attend and graduate with a liberal arts degree from Columbia College.[2]
Career
He began his career with the CIA in 1950 with a tour in Kabul, Afghanistan, under Ambassador Henry Byroad.[2]
He worked for over 12 years at the American Embassy in New Delhi, India with Ambassadors Ellsworth Bunker, Chester Bowles, John Kenneth Galbraith, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, John Sherman Cooper and William Saxbe. In Kathmandu, Nepal, from 1967 to 1969, he worked with Ambassador Carol Laise. His final tour was as Chief of Station at the American Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, under diplomatic cover First Secretary and Special Assistant to Ambassador Mike Mansfield.[2]
He retired in 1980.
