Victoria Police is the primary law enforcement agency of the Australian state of Victoria.
It became known for it brutal methods to crush protests during the Covid lockdowns.[1]
Investigating itself for complaints
Complaints about Victoria Police can be submitted to an Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission, ("IBAC") While, in theory, IBAC can investigate complaints against police, in practice, the overwhelming majority of complaints by the public are sent back to the police for investigation or "management".
When a person dies in police custody in Victoria, although the death is subject to mandatory investigation and inquest by a coroner, the investigation of that death and preparation of the evidence brief is in practice carried out for the coroner by a member of Victoria Police.[2]
In 2001, Dr Ian Freckleton, who sat on the short-lived Police Complaints Authority in the 1980s, believed it was around this time that the myth of Victoria's "clean" force first took hold. "The truth was that Victoria was no cleaner than any other state in Australia. The fact is, there is endemic corruption in the force that is long-standing and exists at disturbing levels today," he said.[3]
Entrapment
With start in 2021, Victoria Police started a joint operation together with ASIO to entrap a 13-year-old autistic boy with a fixation on the Islamic State, after his parents sought help from the authorities.[4] (see article: ASIO for details).
