CIA spook in Greece and the Far East

Alfred Conrad 'Al' Ulmer was a US spook who during his career among other things ran operations in Greece and the Far East[1][2]. Russ Baker suggests in his book Family of Secrets (2009), that Ulmer visited George H. W. Bush in Texas a few days before President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.[3] God, we had fun, Ulmer said in a 1994 interview. We went all over the world and we did what we wanted.[4]
Education
Ulmer graduated from Princeton University in 1939[5].
Career
Ulmer was a Florida newspaper correspondent and advertising executive before joining US Naval Intelligence in North Africa and Italy during during World War II.
He joined the Office of Strategic Services, where he worked in Italy, heading an Austria-Germany section of the Secret Intelligence Branch[6] and oversaw operatives gathering information in Turkey, Egypt, Italy and Austria.
When the OSS was disbanded in 1945, Ulmer became head of the Strategic Services Unit (SSU) in Austria. There, Ulmer expanded his base of operations to include the whole Balkans area. [7]
Ulmer joined the CIA, and was stationed in Madrid, Athens, Paris and Washington during his career.
Ulmer was appointed CIA station chief in Athens from 1953 to 1955, where he made the acquaintance of shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos.[6] According to Russ Baker: "Ulmer was running things in Greece during the country's vicious civil war, the Athens CIA station was also in charge of most Middle East operations and anti-Soviet-bloc efforts in Yugoslavia."[3]
He subsequently became head of the Far East Division in the 1950s.[8]
In a major covert operation in Japan, the agency spent millions of dollars in the 1950's and 60's to support the conservative party that dominated the country's politics for a generation, the Liberal Democratic Party.
At his new position Ulmer coordinated the attempted overthrow of Sukarno, the president of Indonesia. in 1957. The main reason behind sponsoring the rebellion was to remove the growing Communist Party. Ulmer was criticized for the failure of the rebellion.
He was removed, and stationed Paris from 1958 to 1962.
Ulmer left the CIA in 1962 to direct Niarchos' company in London.[6] Ulmer in the 1980s joined the Swiss banking firm Lombard Odier et Cie. in Geneva, later setting up Lombard Odier's operations in Bermuda.
