Adrianus Johannes (Ad) Scheepbouwer is a Dutch business executive in logistics. He attended the 1999 Bilderberg meeting.
Career
Scheepbouwer was born in Dordrecht in 1944. He began working as a waiter on a ship at the age of 16 and then at a dairy plant. Suddenly, his life was thrown into disarray by a serious motorcycle accident. After spending more than a year in the hospital, he reentered the labour market. He began his career on the payroll of the chemical company DuPont. His boss at the time saw that he had talent, but he wanted Scheepbouwer to get a degree before he had a chance to get a promotion. By studying in the evening hours, Scheepbouwer managed to work his way up through container carrier Sealand, air freight forwarder Air Express and Pandair. At the age of 32, he was in charge of the entire administration.[1]
In 1988, Neelie Kroes, then Minister of traffic & Water Management, asked Scheepbouwer to lead the state-owned company PTT post. In 1997, PTT Post acquired the Australian courier company TNT. With this, PTT Post was a significant international player. Not much later, PTT Post split into a telecommunications company (KPN) and a postal company (TNT). Scheepbouwer became chairman of the board of TNT. When KPN had problems in 2001 due to a huge debt burden, Scheepbouwer switched to KPN and became chairman of the board. Scheepbouwer became the focus of a public discussion when it turned out that he had received a lucrative option package when he switched jobs. By taking tough remediation measures, Scheepbouwer managed to save KPN. Two years after his appointment, KPN made a profit again and KPN's debts had fallen sharply. Scheepbouwer was named top executive of the year in 2002.[2][1][3]
Scheepbouwer was succeeded as chairman of KPN by Eelco Blok on 6 April 2011. He also handed over the chairmanship of the Supervisory Board of the Port of Rotterdam to Rutger van Slobbe on 17 May of that year.
Scheepbouwer was a member of the Advisory Board of both NIBC bank and Electronic Commerce platform Nederland, chairman of the Supervisory Board of Maasstad Hospital, member of the Supervisory Board of Stichting Nationaal Fonds Kunstbezit, board member of VNO-NCW and Commissioner of both RFS Holland Holding and vbBank Oyens & Van Eeghen.
