Solo dopo ti lascia entrare.
Notti insonni a inseguire l'idea successiva.
Aree messaggi
Presentazioni, Libri, Film e Serie TV, Radio e SDR, OSINT, Aviazione e ADS-B, Eventi e congressi, Nuovo Ordine Mondiale.
Sala Radio
Avventure testuali
Zork in italiano, Darkiss, Enigma, Sogno, Strega, Tesla. Più i door classici: Galactic Dynasty, Oregon Trail, Port Victoria.
Sala Lettura
Area Pentesting
Whois, interrogazione AbuseIPDB, informazioni sull'IP chiamante.
Come è tenuta in piedi
Grazie a
xqtr — Another Droid BBS gli add-on che danno alla BBS gran parte di ciò che sa fare: VirtualBase, TopBBS, Voteliner, il lettore RSS, il client IRC, il browser Gopher, ThreatSentry.
Come collegarsi
Telnet
timrouter.dns.army:2323consigliato SyncTERM o NetRunner
SSH

Miskatonic BBS
An Italian BBS that never stopped being an experiment: born on a Raspberry Pi, lost to an accident, reborn inside a retired phone, and now running on real metal. The name is Lovecraft's. Most of the rest very nearly is.
The first minute
The moment you connect — before any login — the screen draws a world map out of text characters, and a blinking box frames the spot you are calling from: city, timezone, your local time beside the board's own.
Then the machine stops being a 2026 machine and pretends to be a 1983 WOPR.

Only then does it let you in. It is a welcome that states its allegiances immediately: this is a place that sides with the terminal, not the window.
Try it now
Nothing to install: the terminal below connects to the board straight from your browser. For the full experience — file transfers included — a real client such as SyncTERM is still the better way in.
There are ten seats in total, so do close the window when you are done.
Three lives
01until 2016
A Raspberry Pi, then darkness
The first Miskatonic ran on a Raspberry Pi 1B, the original model. Inter-BBS networks configured with help from Avon of Agency BBS, ANSI art donated by Lobo, add-ons by xqtr. Sleepless nights chasing the next idea.
Then, around 2016, an accident: configuration, customisations and backups lost together. Only the memory survived — and several years of silence.
02the phone years
Inside a retired smartphone
It came back on an unlikely platform: a decommissioned 2018 Huawei P Smart, unrooted, running the board inside a PRoot Debian hosted in Termux. Hence the high ports — 23 and 22 were out of reach, and 2323 and 2222 simply stayed.
Termux's APIs opened experiments no other BBS could run: announcing your presence by blinking the phone's torch, sending a spoken message through the text-to-speech engine, raising a live Android notification. That part is gone now, and it is a little missed.
03since August 2026
Real metal, at last
Moved to a bare-metal Debian GNU/Linux x86_64 server: no more PRoot, no more Termux. A cast-off Dell OptiPlex, because the underlying idea never changed — reuse hardware that is still more than good enough rather than buying new.
The ports stayed as they always were, for the sake of everyone who already knew them. The body changes, not the spirit.
What is inside
The name comes from Lovecraft's fictional university; the SysOp signs himself Indrid Cold. The atmosphere follows from there — but the rooms are concrete.
Message areas
Introductions, Books, Film & TV, Radio and SDR, OSINT, Aviation and ADS-B, Events and conferences, New World Order.
Radio room
Satellite tracking, frequencies, live weather, and an ADS-B database fed by the SysOp's own receiving station.
Text adventures
Zork in Italian, Darkiss, Enigma, Sogno, Strega, Tesla — plus the classic doors: Galactic Dynasty, Oregon Trail, Port Victoria.
Reading room
Wikipedia from the terminal, this day in history, a tarot reading, a library of texts.
Pentesting area
Whois, AbuseIPDB lookups, details on the calling IP. Real tools, not set dressing.
The wider world
An RSS reader, an IRC client, a Gopher browser, a leaderboard of other boards, and a guestbook to sign on your way through.
How it is kept running
The board runs on Mystic BBS 1.12 A48, with some sixty MPL scripts and around fifteen Python ones wired into the menus. Everything around it — startup, supervision, data that refreshes itself — is handled by systemd.
Services and automation
Telnet 2323
the classic way in, for ANSI clients such as SyncTERM or NetRunner
SSH 2222
encrypted gateway: a bridge translates the output from CP437 to UTF-8, so the ANSI art stays readable from any modern terminal
Watchdog
every 5 minutes, checks the service answers and brings it back if it fell over
Weather and ADS-B
every 15 minutes, regenerate the weather shown in the menus and the aircraft database
New sign-ups
every 2 minutes: if someone created an account, the SysOp gets an email
Git mirror
the whole installation is version-controlled in a private repository, synced from the live server
The move from phone to server left a long tail of finishing work: drawing characters arriving doubled because of a CP437-to-UTF-8 double encoding, menu entries pointing at scripts that no longer existed, a geolocation screen that quietly stopped working because a home DNS filter was blocking the service it queried. Things nobody dialling in ever sees — which is precisely the point.
With thanks to
Avon — Agency BBS inter-BBS network configuration, going all the way back to the first Miskatonic.
Lobo the custom ANSI art, donated to the project.
xqtr — Another Droid BBS the add-ons that give the board much of what it can do: VirtualBase, TopBBS, Voteliner, the RSS reader, the IRC client, the Gopher browser, ThreatSentry.
How to connect
Telnet
timrouter.dns.army:2323SyncTERM or NetRunner recommended
The bbsssh user is not a personal account — it is only the door. The real login, or registration if it is your first time, happens inside the board a moment later, exactly as over Telnet. The content is in Italian: that is a deliberate choice, and a hope.
