Two Italian Air Force KC-767A (reg. MM62229, MM62227) aircraft departed Italy today heading toward the Gulf region, with one aircraft routing toward Dubai and the second toward Al Bateen in Abu Dhabi. The flights come as Dubai International Airport has partially reopened after recent disruptions linked to the ongoing regional crisis. While the mission has not been officially confirmed, the deployment may be linked to the repatriation of Italian citizens still stranded in the area. According to tracking data, the first aircraft headed toward Dubai while the second continued toward Al Bateen Executive Airport. Both aircraft belong to the Italian Air Force tanker and transport fleet and are capable of performing both aerial refueling and strategic airlift missions. Operational role likely transport, not refueling At the moment there is no official explanation for the deployment. However, one possible scenario is a repatriation mission for Italian nationals who may still be in the United Arab Emirates or nearby countries following the disruption of commercial air traffic in recent days. Dubai International Airport has begun to reopen gradually, but commercial connections remain limited and irregular. In such contexts, military transport aircraft are often used to evacuate or assist citizens unable to return via normal flights. It is also worth remembering that the KC-767A is not only an aerial refueling tanker but also a strategic transport platform capable of carrying passengers and cargo. The aircraft can be rapidly configured for personnel transport, making it suitable for emergency repatriation missions. A tanker role in the ongoing US-led air campaign against Iran appears highly unlikely. The United States currently has an extremely large tanker force already deployed across the region. In recent days, more than 170 aerial refueling aircraft have been available to support US operations across the Gulf, the broader Middle East, and parts of Europe. Given this massive logistical presence, there would be little operational need to integrate Italian KC-767As into the refueling architecture supporting the ongoing strikes.
